The Love of Jesus Bible Reader Series was developed to assist the youngest readers with scriptural reading and to educate them in the most essential elements of the life of Jesus Christ and His teachings . While many programs appeal to elementary ages, they often fail to deliver a fundamental understanding of the Person and Work of Christ - an understanding which is the foundation for a life of meaning.
Developmental psychologists have long noted that many of today’s Bible-based methods for the young under 12 are too general and not systematic enough. They deliver too many concepts at once, use too many maniputables and materials, and require youth to make metaphorical leaps their brains are not yet able to make to internalize what is being taught.
Reading research shows that while young readers cannot evaluate the interlocks of multiple concepts, they can analyze single concepts in great depth given the right strategies in an intimate learning environment. The the best way for youth to internalize the gospel is to read the gospel texts which gives self-efficacy because they can read it themselves.
Yes, students can learn Bible stories by listening to them, but reading the texts on their own—working with the words of Scripture, to become familiar with the written word as opposed to just the oral word, promotes not only biblical literacy, but literacy itself. Over time, it promotes the development of analytical and critical thinking skills, as well.
The Bible Reader educates young learners in a straightforward and age-appropriate way, guiding them to read Scripture within the framework of a story—the most important story- where they are loved and, in receiving, may love back, expressing their young theologies accordingly.
It presents a series of simplified gospel texts, in sequential order, followed by questions and prayers with leading-edge strategies that help children comprehend key ideas and make personal and imaginative connections with the text. Following the book’s predictable lesson pattern—which appears in black and white, with meaningful visual cues but without other distracting stimuli—helps students learn, think, and build confidence and agility as a reader.
It also helps them know, in a personal way, the transformative message of Jesus’ words of forgiveness, healing, wisdom and hope and to reason from truth to experience in forming a vision of who the Lord of Love is to them.
